Avocado Pit Dyed Bandanas

Over the years, I’ve fallen in love with natural dyeing. With a background in fashion and a deep love of the earth, I love that there’s a way to combine the two that involves less harm to the planet. Dyeing with plants? Seems like a no brainer!

For this project, I wanted to make it as earth friendly as possible with the materials I was using. I sourced a beautiful organic cotton/hemp fabric that I then dyed with avocado pits (one of my favorites to dye with), cut and sewed the fabric into bandanas, and then stamped each bandana with my Poppy and Nettles design.

The only part that makes this bandana slightly less earth friendly, is the ink used to stamp the bandanas. I really needed to find something that would stay on the fabric long term, especially with washing, so unfortunately the ink is not plant based. I didn’t think soy ink would have had lasting power on the fabric, but maybe there’ll be something in the future that’ll work.

Overall, I think I achieved a pretty earth-friendly design! These bananas can be used not only as a fun accessory, but as napkins, hankies, cloth wipes, you name it. It’s not a one time use, they’re versatile which means these bandanas should stay out of the landfill for much longer than many other products out there.

I hope you enjoy this video of how these were made. Some of the shots of the bananas don’t look as pink with the lighting but in person they most definitely have a light pink hue! If anyone is interested in rocking one of these bandanas, email or DM us!
